'Where Wales Begins'
Transport
Welshpool has developed as an important service centre for the area with methods of old and new transport, some of which now entertain visitors.

The opening of the Montgomery Canal in February 1796, brought much prosperity to Welshpool; the town quickly began to experience the new industrial age and, with that, a dramatic rise in population.

The canal soon became lined with wharfs, warehouses, cottages and workshops. A range of goods were transported along the canal, including grain, dairy products and luxury wares with many warehouses storing goods for import as well as export.
